As a representational painter, I care about creating an image that translates the three-dimensional world into a two-dimensional world. I am fascinated by the infinite ways that this can be done. I use myself as a model in my paintings to relate to the viewer feelings of vulnerability, passivity or authority that I experience, often using a high vantage point to create an environment that is disorienting. My still life and interior paintings cater to the same ideas about light, space and color that follow me through all of my work, but differ from my self portraits in that they focus more on representing the illusion of reality as a three dimensional space.
When I paint, I actively respond to specific color relationships that describe space and light. I begin a painting with an idea of something that I want to show to the viewer. I usually find myself doing this by pushing the color contrast in the areas that are part of the concept I am thinking of. I like to work in a very direct way, putting down color as I see it, comparing and correcting throughout the process.
The amount of paint that I use and the energy with which I apply it convey my priority in making paintings that are ultimately about painting. I never find myself struggling to render a form completely, choosing instead to allow forms to create their own reality in the painting with brush and knife marks. I allow my hand to move freely about the canvas, creating and destroying edges until an image emerges. I also invent and compare color relationships until a form develops the qualities I envision. Painting is about illusions, and I am a painter who strives to convey a sense of the space and the light that I see by using marks as the structural foundation instead of the objects I am representing.
